Which Sailing Association Should You Join?

If you are joining the sport of sailboating then a starting point is to sign up as a member with a sailing association. There are associations that are national, regional and local. They are geared towards community members, junior sailors, adult sailors, those who need sailing instruction as well as sailing instructors. On a national level there is the United States Sailing, which is exactly what is sounds like -- an organization devoted to all aspects of sailing for members in the U.S.

Another sailing organization at a national level is the ASA, or American Sailing Association. They are a top authority on boating schools and instruction within the U.S. Through this association you can learn sailing skills with leading certified instructors. The ASA offers sailing instruction that is safe and of high quality. Whether you are comfortable on a sailboat and just want to sharpen your skills or have never sailed before, this association can help you find the perfect instructor. In addition to helping students and teachers find each other the ASA also holds annual sailing events.

There are certainly many other regional and local coastal sailing clubs, organizations and associations to consider joining. An example would be the Southern Maryland Sailing Assn. or SMSA. This association is meant for members in the southern portion of Maryland. The goal of the SMSA is to be the best venue for Southern Maryland and Chesapeake Bay sailors. They host the Screwpile boat race, a nationally known regatta as well as a variety of other competitive and fun events. Even if you don't own a boat and cannot afford to buy one the SMSA can help get you on the water.

Being a member to both a local and national sailing association is recommended because there are benefits to participating in both types of organizations. If you are an experienced sailor who wants to offer instruction, these associations can help lead you to certification schools and even allow you to list your services with them once you are certified. Many people seeking sailing instructors choose from members of national and/or regional associations who they can trust. While there may be small membership fees and requirements these groups are worth joining because they offer credibility as well as a great deal of resources related to the world of sailing.
