Differences Between Sailing Vessel Types

In the world of boating, sailing is one of the most popular types. There are a variety of different sailing vessel types you should know about if interested in learning to sail yourself. Of course no amount of personal research done online or from books can replace one-on-one sailing instruction from an experienced and properly licensed instructor. However by learning a bit more about the different sailboats out there you will have an edge when it comes to beginning your formal sailing education.

One type is the sailing dinghy. This type of boat is small, and may be towed or carried by a larger boat. Sometimes the word dinghy can also mean a small racing yacht or small recreational sailboat. There are utility dinghies that have sailing ability thanks to the rigging but may also feature a motor. These types of boats are often utilized for excursions off the main ship when not docked at a marina or port. Many beginners learning to sail are taught with a small dinghy because this type of boat is sensitive to user maneuvering thus allowing students to learn more efficiently.

Another popular type of sailboat is a yacht. A yacht is a recreational boat that can range in size from small to large. Usually yachts are powered by sails, a motor or a combination of the two. Many yachts have living quarters that can be simple to luxurious. Yacht clubs provide instruction to members, special events and even hold regattas, or yacht races. Yacht racing is a popular water sport for boating enthusiasts who can afford to own, rent or charter a yacht that they know how to race. There are both junior and adult racing classes in yacht club competitions.

Yet another type of sailing vessel is a catamaran. These water vehicles, also known as cats, skim across the surface of the water more quickly than the traditional sailboat because of their twin-hulled design. They are ideal for traveling to tight spots and great for racing because of their weight and speed. As you can see, there are many different kinds of vessels available. If you are a beginner to the world of sailing it helps to spend time on various types of boats to find out which is your favorite.
